Halloween Party Safety Tips

You want your Halloween party or day to run smoothly, for adults and for children, so you need to keep some safety tips in mind.

* If you want to use dry ice to create a fog effect, keep in mind of how dangerous dry ice can be if not handled appropriately. Dry ice is NOT to be consumed. It could cause damage to internal organs if swallowed. If you want to use dry ice with your punch, use two containers, one that fits inside the other. Place the dry ice and hot water in the larger container and the punch in the smaller container. (To get the same effect of fog, only safer, use a fog machine instead of dry ice.)

* If holding the party inside, make sure to remove all breakable or valuable items and put them away to someplace safe.

* Prepare as much in advance as possible so you can enjoy the party yourself. If other parents are helping out, assign what they are to bring and follow up to make sure they remember so you are not caught short at the last minute.

* Have a plan for activities ahead of time, just in case the party slows down. Have Halloween music, short games (children have short attention spans) and things for everyone to do. To avoid a mess, have a pumpkin carving a day or two before the party.

* Do as much outside as possible. This avoids clean up inside. Just remember, if holding a party outside you will want to invite the neighbors.

* Keep all candles away from blowing decorations, and children. Don’t allow children to light candles, nor stand close to candles or glowing pumpkins.

* Make certain that all props are not sharp and are kept away from children. If adults are drinking take any props that may be used in case of an argument and lock them away.

* Never allow a guest who has had too much to drink drive home. Provide transportation with someone who has remained sober to transport people home and make arrangements for vehicles to be picked up the next day.

* Put all lights and candles out after the part is over. Autumn winds can blow and carry sparks to cause fires – especially in dry areas.

*Don’t get too loud to annoy the neighbors. Better yet, invite them to the party too

With a little planning and time to prepare, you can throw a fun, safe Halloween party!
